Digital Sewing Scoop // October

Wow! Another month has flown by and I couldn't wait to sit down to share this month's scoop on the blog today.

Sewing Community Highlights

What's the latest in the Sewing Scene?

This month was the final for The Refashioners challenge run by Portia Lawrie at her blog Makery. The 'out-of-the-box' thinking and sheer sewing magic I have seen both on Instagram(#suitsyou) and Portia's blog are awe-inspiring.

Crafty Cool

Most sewists I know experience a strange excitement at the prospect of adding pockets to, well, everything! But did you know there is a reason why pockets are not found in many traditional female garments like the dress. Discover the history of pockets in this article.

In Melbourne, Spring Racing Carnival is currently in full bloom which means that there is plenty parading of pretty frocks (the ladies) and muscled beauties (the race horses!) Tessuti shared this beautiful dress made by one of their customers a few years ago.

Sewing Skill Builder

Many of us are teaching ourselves to sew and thanks to the wide array of online material, it has never been easier.

Add a faced split hem to anything using this tutorial by Seamwork Magazine. I love this detail.

Do you know the difference between your sewing machine needles? If not, find out here.

Body Love

Real women with real bodies. Lets be kinder to ourselves.

It summer and you know you've heard it...'Fuck the bikini body'. Or have you?! Jo takes a firm stance against the unrealistic expectations that society places on women and their bodies.

Watch it

Take a few minutes out of your day to watch an inspiring video.

Sewing is a practice which means practice makes better (not perfect!). I enjoyed the insights Johanna shared on her You-Tube channel about a systematic approach to learning and sewing.

Hear Me Out

Check out my favourite podcasts of the month.

Side Hustle School is a podcast I only discovered this week about to succeed at doing your side hustle! For me and anyone working at something on the side, it is very timely. I love hearing what others are up to and enjoy the special tips and inspiration that is shared.

Here is another wonderful podcast produced for women by women. Ladies We Need To Talk is the latest podcast by ABC Radio which discusses all the knitty-gritty that comes with being a woman!

And if you have any recommendations that you would like to share, I would love to know!
